An urban rewilding proposal for the centre of Nottingham shows the level of innovative thinking that will be needed to find a new direction for cities in the post-pandemic world.

Retail, which was already struggling before the pandemic, has been hit particularly hard, and the news of the Arcadia Group’s demise will have left many planners wondering what to do next with our cities, to make them more appealing to the urban dweller.

In Nottingham, the city council has opened a conversation about what to do with the site of a half-demolished 1970s shopping centre. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has come up with an option to turn it into 2.5 hectares of wetlands, pocket woodlands and a wildflower meadow, in the heart of the city.

Rethinking our cities is going to become more prevalent in the post COVID-19 world and would be welcome by many yet loathed by others. Let us know what you think.
